President’s Message

Welcome to the 85th Annual Exhibition of the National Watercolor Society. The paintings in this exhibition are the result of an open competition among painters of all fifty states and a dozen overseas countries. They are startling in concept and exciting in color, truly an international show, covering all the many facets of our media.

Thanks are due to our fine set of jurors, Jim Pittman, Pat Cook and Carole Pickle for their selections. From over a thousand slides, the field was narrowed to these one hundred finalists. This was a daunting task; the quality this year was outstanding. We congratulate the featured artists, and at the same time our hearts go out to the artists who were rejected. Truly a great show could have been created with the remainders. Our thanks also to our distinguished Juror of Awards, Christopher Schink, for giving us our prize winners. Also congratulations to those artists whose paintings were chosen for the Travel Show which promotes the best of watercolor across the nation.

Welcome to our new Signature Members selected by the Jury of Selection. We know you will become enthusiastic supporters of the National Watercolor Society.

Many thanks to those great patrons of the arts and friends of our society, the Donors of the Awards. Thanks to you over $21,000 in cash and merchandise are being given to honor our top recipients. We join with the winners in recognizing you and your continued support over the years. We thank you sincerely for your friendship.

We also extend our thanks and gratitude to the City of Brea for hosting this year’s event, especially Thomas Ciganko, Director of the City of Brea Gallery and his staff.

And finally a great big “thank you” to my board, especially the Exhibition Director, Quinton Bemiller. Without this hard working board, this wonderful show would not be possible.
